Dr. Donald J. Leu - TRLD 2008 Keynote Speaker
We are pleased to announce that the Keynote Speaker at the 2008 Technology, Learning & Diversity Conference will be Dr. Donald J. Leu speaking on the topic:
How Reading Comprehension Has Changed While We Weren’t
Looking: Why Students Who Need our Help the Most with the New
Literacies...Actually Receive It the Least
Dr. Donald J. Leu, University of Connecticut
Dr. Leu holds the John and Maria Neag Endowed Chair in Literacy and
Technology, is Professor of Education; President, National Reading
Conference; Director, New Literacies Research Lab.
Following is a synopsis of his presentation:
"Effective use of the information on
the Internet is fundamentally a reading issue, not a technology issue.
The Internet profoundly changes the nature of reading comprehension.
This presentation will share a new and broader vision of reading
comprehension. We argue that public policies based on more traditional
print reading contexts such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB), the
National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), and state reading
assessments fail to recognize the changes that have taken place to
reading comprehension in the age of the Internet.
"Current public policies, reading standards,
assessments, curriculum, and instructional practices must change if we
hope to prepare all students for the reading demands of life in the
21st century. Using recent research, we will explain how online reading
comprehension differs from offline reading comprehension and provide
suggestions for implementing research-based best practices to develop
these new reading skills."
